Smoke bomb wedding Photography. Do`s and don’ts.
Smoke bomb wedding Photography. I`m known as a creative wedding photography, and whilst my preferred style is to shoot mostly in a photo journalistic approach, or documentary wedding photography style, I`m also known for being that “cool wedding photographer”.
Its awesome. I love anything that makes a difference to people’s big days, and smoke bombs is something I get asked about all the time! Everybody wants that cool wedding photography, and little things like this can add such a sense of drama to your images.
However, like all things there`s a big list of Do`s and Do Nots that HAVE to be obeyed I`m afraid. Most are common sense but please do read this entry as abit of a guide but understand that nobody really knows what is going to happen when we let off those grenades!
1 – Nobody really knows what is going to happen when we let off those grenades! Seriously. With Smoke bomb wedding Photography nobody can tell you what the images will look like!
Wind direction, slow or mis firing flares can all massively impact the shot, so dot have your hopes pinned on some amazing shot. Sometimes it just does not work for all the best intentions.
2 – Ask for help. Groomsmen etc are handy for holding the smoke and trying to arrange it so it creates so useful shapes and cool ideas. I usually ask them to hold it around the floor area and once we see the wind direction, they can “paint” with it, so it looks pleasing.
3 – Accept that the dress may get damaged. Seriously. These things are fireworks. If you are not happy to risk it, please don’t do it. Its just not worth it. I`ve herd of flares blowing up on brides and staining the dress bright colours, and these things are quite toxic, so if you breath a mouthful of them it can really ruin your day.
4 – Discuss with everyone beforehand, your photographer, video team, and the venue. Choose a location with LOTS of ventilation and space and arrange yourselves and decide upon composition first because as soon as that flare is lit its action!
5 – Dispose of all the rubbish safely but note that these things kick out such a huge amount of heat that they`ll be hot for some time afterwards.
There you have it. Every shoot I do with smoke grenades so if you really do want to try it my advice is above and above all prepare for it!
