Its awards season! – Award winning photography
Award winning photography – Much like the Oscars or the MOBO`s, the photography industry has its very own, often VIP, award competitions. And seeing as last year left me with lots of time on my hands (thanks Covid! ) I actually got around to entering these comps and collating my own back catalogue of work. Looking at my own Reportage wedding photography, and mixing it in with some more of my more trademark unposed wedding photography style was odd to say the least!
It felt odd going through my portfolio with such a cynical eye, but it was also really interesting viewing your own output in a different way.
So, I’ve been VERY successful with my award submissions. Not to blow my own horn, but over the last year I`ve bagged myself seventeen different awards, across a host of different award bodies.
I`d say that the biggest award would be that I`ve been shortlisted for IMAGE IN THE YEAR by the wonderful people at “Photographers keeping it real” awards, AND “Photographers keeping it real” also announced that I`ve included in their “35 best wedding photographers” awards.
This is a highly respected reportage / art style site, and I came in at number 26. Number 26 IN THE WORLD.
To be able to rub elbows with some of my heroes, and peers is humbling.
I also picked up three ( so far ) Masters Of Wedding Photography awards, three “This is reportage” awards ( there was a staggering 13,485 images entered, and only 175 were awarded ), and numerous mentions and features in “Your Perfect Wedding” photographer awards every month. These are generally “confetti” or “dad moments” style monthly competitions and in my opinion works well to keep the output interesting and fresh.
LUXLife magazine also awarded me “Wedding Photographer Of The Year”, I then went on to scope Seven “Badass Photographers” Winter/Spring awards, as well as being featured on the highly respected “Shotkit” website.
Awards do not ultimately mean a lot though. There nice, and yes it is a thrill when you find out that you`ve been placed, but its real value in my opinion is that you get to see so many different, and amazing wedding photography that I come away feeling super inspired and excited to grab my cameras, and see what I can win in the future!
