My Top Five Elopement Destinations as an Alternative Wedding Photographer!
I’m super lucky that I’m not just an Alternative Wedding Photographer and I’m really blessed that I get to work all over the world, so I’m often asked what’s the best location to elope too. And seeing how Micro-weddings and wedding elopements are going to be a big interest to people in the next few years then I thought I would write a short post about it!
Firstly, there is no favourite. Sorry. I love it all. The heat and scenery of the Caribbean, the snowy frost of Nordic countries, to the hustle and bustle of US cities such as Las Vegas and New York. Each are amazing adventures, experiences and truly unforgettable. And as I’m an alternative wedding photographer I LOVE travel. It’s an easy win/win for me.
But each has different things to bear in mind. Like the Nordic countries, I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH – they are cold. And I do not mean normal UK cold, I mean FREEZING! I’ve shot in Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, and often the best light is dusk and dawn, so you’re usually up super early and on the road to locations and it’s bitter. It’s very dark. You’re barely awake and it’s freezing. But then the sun rises and it becomes magical. Just unbelievable. If you crave adventure, I can definitely recommend it. Definitely Check out the Ice Hotel In Sweden, Its amazing and I actually did a blog post about that shoot here!
So next is the warmer countries – and my fav locations are all in the Caribbean. I’ve shot in Jamaica, Mexico & St Lucia and love them! All my wedding shoots have been on resort and its a lot easier for the couples to relax as the resort usually take care of everything… and food and drink is never far away! Its definitely worth getting off the resort for photography so you can make the photography your own. Generally the flights are long, so its worth staying as long as you can, and I usually stay for at least a week myself so we can take our time with the photography.
And finally city weddings! I’ve shot in New York, Las Vegas in the United States as well as numerous locations in Europe including Bordeaux, Santorini, Cyprus, Florence, and Lake Bled. City elopement weddings are great, there’s loads to do and it’s easy to pick stuff up in case you forget things (honestly this happens so often!). Street photography is such fun as usually the public get involved in the photography too, usually in the background. My style of alternative wedding photography really does suit this approach.
So there we have it! The best thing to do is always give me a call to discuss your needs, and if I can give you one piece of advice its too book a planner to help with everything – I can honestly recommend Nadia at Amulet events, she’ll take a lot of the hard work off you and make everything so much easier for you!
