Questions for a Wedding Photographer

As a wedding photographer I’m often asked for advice and any hints more tips that I can give to wedding couples. Obviously when couples booked me as their wedding photographer it’s very much a hand holding process to get them to the aisle and I’m more than happy to send them out my 24 page PDF full of useful hints and tips questions and answers and basically anything that I can do to make sure that their wedding photography is absolutely killer. However I’m also sharing that information here with you now so here’s a few of the most common questions I get asked and there answers.

Questions for a wedding Photographer
How long before I get some photos? My usual turn around is between 4 to 5 weeks and that is delivery of the digital files on a beautiful hand created and crafted online gallery. The day after the wedding I also supply some first look photos to my couples as well as tagging them on Instagram and making sure they’re all of their suppliers venue etc are well represented on that post. Lead times do vary for photographers my lead time is quite short simply because I do this full time and have been doing this for 27 years. It’s a really important question to be asking your photographer when can you expect the photography back.
The next most common question or series of questions that I encounter is to do with the timeline now I can’t really give any real advice on this as every waiting timeline is different but broadly rule of thumb I will arrive ( I’m not saying every photographer will do this but I’m just saying this is what works for me ) but I turn up about two hours before a ceremony to capture the bridal prep and any getting ready photos. I always stay for about an hour after the first dance as I feel I’ve captured everything in the day most of my contracts cover an 8 to 10 hours and whilst I do the occasional half day contract I do find it can be a little bit rushed trying to capture a story and only really works for the more intimate weddings.
Bridal portraits or couples portraits ( my gallery is here ) as they’re also known is something that does cause a lot of anxiety with couples and it’s a question I get asked a lot I always try and schedule these in so they’re very quick usually lasting no more than 5-10 minutes and I break them up into four to five sessions during the wedding day just so that my couples are not away from their wedding guests for any prolonged series of time. I work incredibly quickly as a wedding photographer, I’m not a photographer that will take you away from your wedding for hours on end so you don’t get to see your guests, and I would definitely recommend checking with other suppliers as to how they are going to capture these images for you as my couples portraits are always relaxed informal and candid, with lots of laughter and terrible jokes. Venues such as Dodford Manor are perfect for these as there’s lots of outdoor space.
And the last question I always get asked is about coloured smoke grenades and confetti, as a creative wedding photographer I enjoy using colour in my work as colour to me really brings an image to life. I always recommend that my couples purchased their confetti smoke grenades etc or any other props light sparklers from reputable sources and over the years have amassed a database of people that I can honestly recommend that they purchase from rule of thumb for these kind of products is don’t buy them off Amazon as though you should be cheap rubbish and will ultimately only let you down and you’ll be disappointed in the photography afterwards.
